LETTERS TO THE CONTRA COSTA

Donate organs
Your articles, "Kidney swap" and "Creative organ donations"
highlighted the potential to save lives if more people were organ
donors. A "kidney swap" can help a select few among the 53,000
waiting, but the broader issue is how to persuade people to be
donors.
There is a voluntary network of organ donors (and recipients)
called LifeSharers that provides motivation for people to be donors.
All who join the network (for free) agree to donate their organs
when they die.
Members direct their organs to a recipient in the LifeSharers
network if there is one in need. So when a LifeSharer member dies,
if you need an organ, you are eligible before those on long waiting
lists who did not join the network.
The concept behind LifeSharers is like the "kidney swap": offer
an organ donation and receive higher priority if you need one.
As a donor, you know that, when you die, you will help people who
have made a similar commitment to help others when they die.
You can get information and join the network for free at http://www.lifesharers.com/.
